Before coming to Babylon 5, Laurel Takashima had been stationed at a corrupt mining station on Mars.  There, it was common to go on the take in order to get a better job.  Because she didn't, she was skipped over in every promotion.  So out of frustration, she started to break the rules and therefore got in trouble with the Earth Alliance.  When Jeffrey Sinclair became her commanding officer there, he promissed to get her promoted, if she behaved correctly.  After having been made Commander of Babylon 5 in 2257, Sinclair called for her to become his deputy, an offer she gladly accepted.

In 2258, Takashima was posted on the Rim, and replaced by Lieutenant Commander Susan Ivanova.
